Activities and Events
The Poison Center of the School of Pharmacy together with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Dept, Voices of the South Plains Community Coalition
Managed Care Center for addictive & other disorders and Home Instead Senior Care will be conducting a Medication Cleanout Saturday, April the 30th, from 10am to 2 pm. This is a community event designed to encourage residents to clean all unused, expired and no longer needed medications out of their homes in an effort to prevent poisonings, abuse, misuse, and environmental contamination. This is free to the public and will be conducted as a drive through – so participants do not even need to leave the comfort of their vehicles. There will be TWO locations for the drive through: Market Street United-50th & Indiana as well as Mae Simmons Community Center-19th & Oak. Upon arrival, participants will be asked several short, non-identifying survey questions and then their meds will be accepted for disposal. Please encourage your friends and family members to participate in this important event. As you spread the word, we need others to know that our events are limited to household participation only (no loads from clinics, nursing homes, mission groups, etc.) due to hazardous waste requirements.
Also, WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! As part of this program, we log the meds that come in (no patient names--drug info only) as part of a research effort to help identify and address the problem of unused medications. This is a very big undertaking and we need all of the help that we can get. If you or anyone you know might be interested and can pass a background check, please go to MedicationCleanout.com and register as a volunteer. Adults without medical training can still help, so they need not be pharmacists, nurses, etc. We cannot, however allow minors to assist on site due to liability risks. We are conducting a mandatory training session Friday, April 29th, from 6:45 pm to ~8pm at the Mae Simmons Community Center located at 19th & Oak – food will be provided at the training as well as during the event. Although the event is open to the public from 10-2, we generally continue processing of the meds until at least 6pm, so we can use volunteers anytime from about 0930 until 6 pm or any portion of that. Also, all volunteers receive a Medication Cleanout t-shirt that must be worn for access to the processing area on Saturday. After that, it’s yours to keep!
